The main character in my new books wears glasses and while writing some scenes where Sophie visits the optometrist I needed to clarify some parts of the story. I walked into my optometrist and said the words. ‘I am writing a children’s book and need to ask you some questions to make sure I’m on track.’
It was scary telling these professionals I was writing about what they do. I looked around children’s frames and found the exact frame I imagined Sophie choosing. They were generous with their tips and advice and my story is now more authentic than relying on my memory. It’s been a long time since I was a kid at the optometrist or eye specialist and it’s all so different now. The frames are gorgeous and bit different to the ones I used to wear!
This visit was such a confidence booster, as I now know that I am on the right track with my story and it isn’t so scary asking professionals for help!
