It’s been a month since I realised I wouldn’t be able to produce the three books in my chapter book series. So, what has happened since?
It’s been a month of emotional highs and lows, starting with some hard decisions and figuring out where to from here. There have also been many highlights including a trip to Sydney to attend the Chapter Book writing course with Lesley Gibbes at the Australian Writers Centre. I nearly didn’t go, as at that point I still hadn’t decided whether to continue my writing. Lesley gave us so much great information and advice and it was lovely catching up with some local authors.
You can do it Joey! is continuing to sell and I dropped more books to a local bookstore. I’m excited about a couple of story time events coming up during April.
The Goulburn Reader Writer Festival was a lot of fun and I spent the day with some fellow children’s authors in the Author’s Alley. We also met Hazel Edwards and she generously offered her time to give us advice and pose for photos!
At a local SCBWI event I was on a panel with some other independent authors as we discussed our experiences with Indie publishing. When it was time to talk about challenges – I had a story to tell! This was my first experience on a panel and even though it was terrifying it was a fabulous experience.
Picture book author Michelle Worthington has created a 30-day socialmedia challenge for creatives. It has been an eye opener and I made my first ever video!

I have certainly stepped outside my comfort zone this last month in an attempt to figure out how to get the word out there so the Sophie books can be produced. It has become clear that I do want to continue down this path of writing children’s books and I have a notebook full of post-it notes with ideas and thoughts on how to achieve that. It was really hard to tell people about my ‘failure’ (that’s how I felt) and the support I have received has been wonderful and I know Sophie’s stories will be out there soon for young readers.
