This writing life of mine is still fairly new and I’m learning about it every day. You can do it Joey! happened organically when Meaghan Thomson and I decided to Indie publish the book, initially for my great-niece, with no idea what were doing. The series of Sophie books were stories I needed to tell. Meaghan was on board again to illustrate and we are so thrilled with book one, Sophie Makes New Friends.
My current work-in-progress nearly went into the bin on the weekend. I had tangled myself up and couldn’t find my way out of the mess but having coffee with a writing friend put me back on track. She had some ideas and I’m at my desk today reworking the story. This story began on a misty night at a beautiful old hotel in the Southern Highlands. I imagined seeing a ghost out the window and wrote the original idea on the back of the menu. I came across an article by Alison Rushby about her book The Turnkey where she wrote a list of her favourite things and put them in this book. I wrote a list too and some of these ideas are in my WIP. Old houses and clothes, friendship, family, ghost stories, adventures with friends.
There is a new story waiting in the wings too. I bought The Children’s Writer’s Notebook while on our Big Overseas Adventure and have been working through the exercises. In a library in Tuscany the story of a goanna in the outback who finds a magic lamp and wishes to meet a human off the train popped up. And he does … but the human isn’t as happy about it as he is. I have no idea where this story will go but I look forward to finding out!
