This is a photo of six-year-old Kerry. She had recently gone through some life-changing surgery which led to her facing the world wearing rather thick glasses. These glasses would place her as ‘a little bit different’ in the eyes of some. Throughout her life she would have more life-changing eyesight surgery and they would shape the way she lived her life and the adult she became. Her story needed to be told and some of the stories in Sophie’s series are inspired by and based on her experiences.
I would love young readers like the six-year-old Kerry to relate to my characters, to see themselves and their lives in my stories and to fall in love with my characters. Last year at the Kids and YA Festival in Sydney, I heard Jacquie Harvey tell the story of receiving a letter from a young fan. She wrote that when she has a difficult decision to make asks herself, ‘What would Alice-Miranda do?’ and that story filled me with joy. They are the characters I want to write. The characters who inspire young readers!
This little girl inspires me to put my stories out into the world to hopefully inspire others.
