My new work-in-progress began as an exercise from the Children’s Writer’s Notebook. This book was purchased from the British Library while on the Big Overseas Adventure. Little did I know then how important the book would become.
I’ve been reading books from each of the authors, some much loved and some I hadn’t heard of.
Initially if an exercise looked too hard I skipped over it. I then decided to work through the exercises in order and attempt to write something. Some words came quickly; others took time. Nothing I have written is brilliant and I have no idea where some of the ideas have come from. I’ve written nonsensical Dr Suess type rhymes, a list of rules for an animal kingdom (think Babar), created a game for soft toys (a la Pooh Bear) and am rather excited about a goanna who makes a wish.
The exercises have stimulated my little grey cells and given me hope that I will be able to continue to write chapter books for children.
