In my last post I mentioned some courses I enrolled in during the last few months. Writing and marketing filled my weeks and through pages and pages of notes I have found clarity about writing new work and promoting my books and my story.
MOJO September with the Australian Writers Centre was brilliant. I’ve worked on breaking bad habits and creating new ones. Manuscript drafts were finished and new story ideas were discovered. I found my creative MOJO and some surprising story ideas popped up! A new children’s story appeared while my great niece Tayla was visiting. She’s seven now and loves reading and writing stories.
At a Write Stuff workshop at Libraries ACT presented by a writing buddy, I learnt that a little planning for my books isn’t a bad idea! I’m not a planner of my writing which is surprising as I do like to plan my life. I love a list and am now busy writing lists for my new story idea.
The ‘Showing and Telling’ workshop at Writing NSW was another excuse for a trip to Sydney. I came away with ideas how to tighten up my writing and am trying hard to incorporate them into my current work-in-progress.
Then there were the marketing courses. Oh, how we love marketing! The main take away from all the courses was to simplify my marketing plan. This is one area where overthinking took over. A new, much simpler plan has been created and 2020 is the time to put all the new ideas into practice.
So what did I learn from all these courses?
Showing up and walking into rooms of business owners and writers was terrifying. Our friend, the imposter syndrome, was out in force. I learnt that I was there for the same reason as everyone else, to learn about my craft and my business. I kept to my rule and introduced myself to one new person each time and often I chatted with many more.
While doing online courses, I learnt to face the fear and reach out to connect with others. This has led to meeting fabulous entrepreneurs and I now have new ideas to share with my community.
Do your research and find the courses that work for you. There are many online and face-to-face courses out there. Aside from learning new skills you form connections with other creators.
It’s been exhausting and fun and I’ve come away with more skills and insights into what 2020 will look like as I continue with this writing adventure of mine.
